Minke Whales at last!

November 5th, 2007

The last day of September brought us sunshine and whales at last! After a tip off from the Birsay Bay Tearoom to say there were whales in the bay we set out on a mission to find them from our place.

After about half an hour we spotted gulls & gannets feeding out from our cliff & amongst them a fin. In fact it soon became apparent there were 3 Minke whales enjoying a feed. We watched these whales for about two & a half hours & got some great sights of their mouths, long backs as they circled their well earned food.

It was a wondorous sight on a calm, sunny sunday afternoon…

Orcas 2007

June 16th, 2007

To date unfortunately we have not seen any Orcas from our cliffs however on the 28/03/07, a pod of 7 Orcas were seen at Windwick Bay in South Ronaldsay. It was suggested they might have been hunting seals.

Also a pod of 5 Orcas were seen on 11/05/07 at Grimness Head. Both sightings of the Orcas were seen by Steve & Sarah Sankey & their guests down in South Ronaldsay. Log onto www.orcadianwildlife.co.uk to view some great photo’s!
